Reese hand-binding their zine From Baybayin to Abakada (2025).
There is something so intimate about your personal relationship with music and its ability to momentarily transport you back to a certain point of time.
A song that you repeatedly listened to last summer will summon that once-familiar sun to warm your skin for exactly three minutes and fifty-two seconds; the laughter of a forgotten joke echoing in your ears after the last note has faded. An old movie that you can’t remember the plot of, and yet, always resurfaces back to your memory when a particular song plays on shuffle purely because you were humming the chorus during the ending credits. Regardless of how many different people listened to that one same song, everyone has a different fragment of their life that’s attached to it. The same way that we have gotten accustomed to the proliferation of music readily available to us due to convenience of online streaming platforms — it’s easy to also forget a memory that was once precious to us.
Join Reese for School of Zines workshop #18: MUSIC & MEMORY to capture fleeting memories summoned by song into a tangible form. Come to the workshop with a sentimental heart and song or two in mind.
Reese Claro is a Western Sydney-based interdisciplinary designer, zine-maker, writer, and photographer with a heart for storytelling. They’re interested in how different creative mediums can be used to share not only their own stories but the voice of their own community as well. Reese likens their creative practice to an orange: by sharing parts of themself, they hope to bring sweetness to other people’s day. And as always: an orange is sweeter when it’s shared.
